Dental prosthetics and dentures

If teeth are missing, they should be replaced as soon as possible. Timely replacement of missing teeth can prevent tooth shifting, tilting and chewing dysfunctions, thereby improving quality of life. There are many ways to restore function, aesthetics and phonetics when teeth are missing. Crowns are used when teeth are already severely damaged (for example with large fillings) but the natural tooth should still be preserved. The affected teeth are ground down below the gum line and prepared. The crown is then placed over the tooth like a cap in the shape of the natural tooth. Various materials — from plastic and precious metals to ceramics — are available for crown fabrication.


Bridges are fixed dental restorations in which the adjacent teeth are ground down and used as bridge supports or anchors. They can range from a more affordable metal-colored option to more expensive all-ceramic bridges.


An optimal and long-lasting solution for replacing one or several teeth is the implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is inserted into the jawbone. Together with the structure attached to it, it serves as the support for the actual dental prosthesis, such as crowns, bridges or full dentures. This provides a wearing comfort that makes the prosthesis barely noticeable to the patient. With proper care and preventive treatment, implants can last as long as a natural tooth.


Veneers or ceramic shells are veneer plates about half a millimeter thick. They are not dental replacements in the strict sense and are used for minor defects as a tooth-preserving solution. Individually manufactured by a specialized dental technician, veneers can make crowns unnecessary if the appropriate conditions are met.
